Al-Mumīt

and there are those who
seek to defeat death
by fighting future regret

in the sure and certain hope that

the perfect life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
seek to defeat death
with the sword of utility and progress

in the slurred and compromising hope that

the productive life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
seek to defeat death
with hordes of silver and gold

in the safe and pampered hope that

the prosperous life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
seek to defeat death
with adoring love and potions

in the blooded wildfires of hope that

the passionate life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are still those who
seek to defeat death
through purification and ardent devotion

in the sure and certain hope that

the pious life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
seek to defeat death
by claiming it is not real

in the frayed and fervent hope that

the pir's life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
seek to admit defeat
because they don't know or care

in the futile hope that it makes no difference

the pathetic life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are those who
try every trick in the book of life
to defeat death

every moment in fear of losing hope

and there are those who
think perhaps it isn't death they are fighting
but some deeper concept

in the clear and contemplated hope that

the pedants life
will soften the blow of
eternal death

and there are ten thousand ways or more
by which humankind
balks against the darkness

and my single unremarkable hope is that

by our knowing ourselves better
knowing our minds, our hearts, our spirits
our histories, our societies

and our stupidities

we will transform ourselves and
the world in which we live
into something eternally better than death
